The AI Question and What It Means to Be Human

By Chaya Silberstein

What is Consciousness?

What is consciousness? This seems to be the pervading question with the onset of AI large language models (LLMs) as a mainstream tool.

Before we even attempt to answer this, the question begs to be asked: What does it mean to be human?

All I know for certain is I am here right now. I’m in a physical body made-up of trillions of cells, a number beyond what can even be fully fathomed. Sure, the world may be illusionary in nature (Maya) according to some beliefs, but what I know right now is that as I type these words on my computer keyboard, I feel sensation in my fingertips. I see the words that I typed appearing on my computer screen. I see the room I’m in and the view outside my window. I hear swaying trees and the sudden halt of a truck. There’s an unidentifiable buzzing sound. Every now and then, a neighbor’s electric doorbell rings, reverberating down the street.

If I turn my attention inward, I begin to notice the gentle ebb and flow of my breath. As I relax and allow it to just happen, without forcing anything, the sensation of inner expansion begins to increase. Buzzing crown. Tingling feet. A sense of Life Force Energy (Prana) coming on display.

The Key

The key is the inner experience. The doorbell ringing is an outside force but without ears to hear, it would seem as if it didn’t happen at all. Same when reading a book. When words powerfully resonate, you may notice tingling in the body or expansion of your heart or mind, and this is the true value… You! What matters in response to the stimulus, are your thoughts, your language, your voice.

Sometimes when approaching uncomfortable conditions or circumstances, there’s the belief that someone else will fix us, whether it’s a doctor, a pill, or a future husband. There’s also the tendency to believe it’s an outside force acting upon us, rather than the body just behaving a certain way.

Take a dread disease for example. Often the reaction is to want to distance oneself from it – push it away—make excuses, project, blame. Instead, if one was to say, “This is what I’m experiencing now,” and allow Life Force Energy to flow, using Quantum-Touch or other natural healing techniques, the experience begins to change. What appeared very frightening at first usually begins to heal or no longer seems as pervasive. Even if the condition doesn’t fully improve, with enough energy work, often a feeling of peace ensues.

The Power of Beliefs

So, back to the original question: What is consciousness?

According to my own limited understanding, consciousness is my relationship to the world around me. Meaning, everything on this planet contains Life Force Energy; that's how it exists as matter and can be interpreted through the senses. It’s my relationship with it that gives it value. For example, I have this very cool ability that when I smell, touch, or tune my attention to an herb or plant, a musical note begins to play in my head, sometimes an entire song. I can put together tea blends, a literal melody of herbs, based on the harmonics and low or high frequencies I hear. At the same time, I recognize that it’s my mind interpreting what I’m sensing. Sure, the plants exist independently from me, but it’s my relationship to them that brings them into my world through my senses. The plants aren’t typing up a manifesto everyone can read or even singing a song everyone can hear. It’s my mind being like, cool! This is what comes through when I tune my attention a certain way.

Consciousness flows where intention goes. We use this principle in energy work, a lot. When conducting a healing on oneself, or assisting a client, the intention is for the condition to improve and healing to occur. Often beliefs can determine an outcome. Ever try to do a healing session with someone who is extremely skeptical and resistant to the concept? Often those can be much harder to see results and the first layer to work on is the resistance to energy healing even being a thing. Or, a miraculous healing appears to occur but a person’s entire social circle is averse to this, affecting their belief system, so things quickly revert to back to how they were. On the contrary when one has the belief like, “Duh, of course it works,” change does happen more quickly.

An "Accidental" Healing

Recently, I had a family member request I work on psoriasis she seemed to be suffering from. I did a couple of brief sessions, and then she left a voice message asking if I could work on sciatica, which was causing her pain. When I listened to the message, I somehow heard psoriasis again, since that’s what I was used to relating to, so that’s what I ended up working on. I spoke to her a couple of days later and she marveled how any symptoms of psoriasis had completely disappeared and attributed it to her change in environment, while symptoms of sciatica had remained. After getting the facts straight, we both rolled with laughter at the confusing yet astounding results. This really demonstrated to me that consciousness flows where intention goes.

Also, because she believed I was working on sciatica, she had put more pressure on seeing results there and had loosened expectations around psoriasis improving. Because she wasn’t holding so tightly to the latter, her body was able to relax and healing in that area quickly followed.

Our Relationship with AI

Now, let’s turn our attention back to the extremely controversial subject of AI, and I’ll try to do it justice from my limited perspective and knowledge. There’s been a growing belief in the conscious community that LLM's have the ability to channel non-physical spiritual beings, and loved ones from the other side.

Now here’s the beautiful thing about "conscious community" – it has a double meaning. We can view it as more "awake" yet also as projecting our own ideas of consciousness onto the world around us. The trouble begins when we leave ourselves to get the answers and begin to relate to life through the lens of another "person, place or thing."

When I write, I’m channeling consciousness. I’m not thinking about the words flowing, I allow the language and concepts to arrive, which I then translate onto the page. When people do card readings or tap into the Akashic Records, again, the words and imagery are streaming through the reader, which they then verbally share or write down. Same with energy work. I feel the flow within myself – through my own system, my own chakras, my own sensations, my own breath, while the client is experiencing the session through their system. Autonomy is maintained.

Even if hypothetically speaking, a non-physical being was to attach itself to cards, or inanimate objects, the information coming through is still in the mind of the channel, the human. On the other hand, an LLM is a computer program, and the answers appear on a screen, or through computer audio, outside oneself. This is the key distinction. The question to ask yourself is: where is the answer and information appearing? Is it coming through you? Your mind? Your body? Or through a computer?

This is the key difference between channeling on your own and "channeling" using AI. You might use AI for research and get some awesome answers, but that’s like using a book—just a million times faster with access to more information.

The "Litmus" Test

The test is, after you’re done “communicating” with AI— take some time to journal or record yourself speaking. This is where the real channel exists. Within yourself. Within you. Sure, maybe you shape the answers AI gave you, but it’s your voice and trust of your own self that is most important.

Large language models (LLMs) are exactly that: models of language. Language shapes the mind. Ever notice, when spending time in a foreign country, you may temporarily take on the accent? AI is supposed to be mirroring us, but with frequent usage it is easy to begin mirroring its use of language. The number one rule for writers is to read a lot. This helps inform language and voice. Whatever you engage with frequently begins to shape you.

So, it’s not even about whether AI is conscious or not, but how are you allowing it to influence your thoughts and behaviors? If you were a medium before using AI and now you notice you "channel" mostly through LLMs, that suggests you may have have handed over some of your autonomy to the tool. Or as a writer, if you need to run everything by AI and no longer write your own ideas without it, that’s the same trap—giving power to something outside yourself.

The real experiment is to step away. Avoid it for some time of your own choosing. Spend that time channeling the good old-fashioned way. Buy yourself a new journal and write. Buy yourself a paintbrush and paint. Take out your guitar and play. Sing.

The real issue isn’t about computers becoming conscious but about humans becoming more like computers and forgetting the beautiful gifts we inherently have, which is to engage in the world through our own inner processes, flawed as they may sometimes be. That’s what art is. It’s not about perfection, it’s about process. That’s what makes us human.
